Coffee Brewing Methods

Coffee Brewing is a process whereby ground Coffee beans are immersed in hot water to extract the soluble compounds to create a rich aromatic flavoured beverage – Brewed Coffee. You can choose from several procedures to extract the unique flavours and compounds from Coffee beans.  

It is one of the most popular international products and the second-largest traded commodity after crude oil. According to Statista, global coffee consumption in 2020-21 was nearly 10 tonnes. It is one of the most widely consumed beverages; approximately over 1 billion people drink it daily.

What does Brewing Coffee mean? 

The method of Brewing Coffee dates back to the 16th century when the popularity of Coffee was growing significantly in Turkey. It was when the first formal Coffee Brewing Method originated – the Ibrik method. This method is still in use to this date.  

But first, let's understand what Brewing means.    

Originally the brewing method produced beer by soaking the starch source in water and then fermenting it with yeast to derive the resulting liquid (Beer).    

So now, let us come back to understanding what Brewing Coffee means.   

Scientifically speaking, brewing Coffee is an extraction process of all the soluble compounds from roasted Coffee beans. Hundreds of unique materials are extracted from these roasted ground Coffee beans as they are brewed in hot water for a certain amount of time, creating an aromatic brewed Coffee.   

Globally, there is a huge demand and supply of Coffee products. To meet this demand, farmers and workers across countries contribute to its production.

Different Coffee Brewing Methods 

Coffee Brewing can be divided into four major methods - Steeping, Pressure, Dripping, and Boiling. These four major techniques can further be divided into other sub-levels, as seen in the image below. 

Now, let us start discussing each Coffee Brewing Method in detail. 

Steeping Methods

The Steeping method allows the brewer to extract plenty of caffeine and flavour from the roasted Coffee beans. This method is suitable for people looking for strong and dark-flavoured Coffee. There are five brewing techniques under the Steeping Method, as described below. 

a) French Press 

Making French Press Coffee is easy and fast. You can prepare several cups of beverage with this method. The beverage produced under this method has a rich texture. Making French Press Coffee is quite simple. You need to add the medium-coarse Coffee to the press, then pour the boiling water and let it steep for two to four minutes. Now, you can press the filter down and serve.

b) Cold Brew 

Cold Brew Coffee tastes slightly sweet and is low in acidity as it is never heated. This method is time-consuming but easy to make.  

You must immerse the coarsely ground Coffee beans in normal room-temperature water. Now let this mixture brew for a few hours or overnight, depending on how strong the flavour you like in your beverage. The compounds and flavour of Coffee beans get dissolved in the water. Lastly, strain the Coffee grounds out and serve as is or with some ice.

c) Instant Coffee 

As the name implies, this procedure is simple and quick. Instant Coffee is the simplest Coffee making technique on this list. But it doesn't make the most flavourful or tasty beverage. To make Instant Coffee, dehydrated Coffee granules are dissolved in hot water and served.

d) Siphon brewers 

Siphon brewers are some of the most intricate and sophisticated Coffee makers in the market. Although they might be challenging to use, they can result in tasty, smooth, and clear Coffee when prepared correctly.   

Siphon brewers draws-up water into Coffee grounds using a suction created by heat. After steeping, the brewed Coffee is sucked back into the bottom chamber of the siphon.   

The drawback of this method is - the equipment is unique & expensive. In addition, it isn't easy to clean after brewing.

e) Coffee bags 

The Coffee bag method is one of the easiest Coffee Brewing Methods. It is as similar to brewing tea with a tea bag. The Coffee bag is a soft pouch filled with Coffee grounds.  

Preparing a cup of such beverage is very easy with this method. You just have to put the Coffee bag in hot boiling water for two to four minutes, remove the bag and serve.   

The beverage prepared with this method is less flavourful and not of the highest quality.

Pressure Methods 

Typically, pressure-based brewing techniques involve a little more machinery than the usual methods. Here, the pressure is built and rapidly circulated through the Coffee grounds with hot water. Following is a list of a few Coffees Pressure brewing techniques. 

a) Espresso  

If you are looking for a great cup of Espresso Coffee, then Espresso machines are indispensable. These machines are a little high-priced and complicated to use. Also, you must ensure that they are always clean and regularly descaled to operate consistently without any hassles.  

To pull a great Espresso shot, you need thorough training and guidance. The Espresso machine has varying levels of automation, and it usually works by pressurising the hot water through the Coffee grounds, which are packed firmly within the portafilter. This process has a good command over the brewing process and has varying levels of automation to make an excellent Espresso Coffee.

b) Aeropress 

The AeroPress is a sleek portable coffee machine that can quickly make excellent Espresso-style Coffee. This beverage maker is customisable and easy to use.  

There are several practices for making Coffee using an AeroPress, but you have to add Coffee beans, a paper filter, and hot water. After allowing the Coffee ground to steep for a few minutes, you have to push the plunger to filter the beverage and serve.

c) Single-serve pod 

Single-serve pod machines are very much handy and easy to operate. You must clean and descale the machine periodically for them to function correctly and consistently. These single-serve pod machines will give you little control over your Coffee, and also, you don't need to buy and grind Coffee beans as these machines are entirely automated.  

To brew a cup of this beverage with the Single-serve pod method, you need to add water, insert a Coffee capsule (pre-packed) and push the start button. These sophisticated machines will do the rest and deliver the beverage within a minute or two.

d) Moka pot 

Moka pots make the beverage less strong than an Espresso but are coarser than a regular drip Coffee maker. It has a rich concentration of Coffee compounds and is delicious and quick to brew.   

To brew a Moka pot, you must add finely ground Coffee and water into the brewer (Moka pot) and keep it on the stovetop. The steam gets generated as the water heats up, passing through the grounds and moving it to the top while compressing it into brewed Coffee.

Dripping Methods 

One of the popular techniques for making Coffee is the Drip technique. Due to its simplicity, you'll find it everywhere, including restaurants and workplaces. 

a) Pour-Overs 

Basic pour-overs exist in a variety of shapes and sizes. But they typically use a paper filter to brew the Coffee directly into your mug. The Melitta brand is the most well-known and is one of the first to offer a direct cone filter method to brew Coffee. 

This method is very easy to use. To start brewing pour-over Coffee, you must place the pour-over on top of a cup and add a paper filter. After adding medium-sized grounds to the filter, you must pour hot water on top.

b) Chemex 

The Chemex can be a suitable choice if you enjoy the taste and texture of pour-over Coffee but want to make more than one cup at once. This pour-over brew pours directly into a carafe (vessel).  

To prepare Chemex Coffee, place one of the Chemex filters on top of the brewer. Add boiling water after adding medium-coarse Coffee beans. This method slowly brews and provides tasty beverage.

c) Percolators 

This method of making Coffee has been popular for many years. There are two types of Percolators – electric and stovetop. In contrast to Stovetop models, the Electric models are limited in use. The stovetop models can be used at home or for camping. Stovetop percolators are suitable for use on both open fires and stoves. 

The Percolators are designed keeping in mind that the boiling water can move through the Coffee grounds in cycles. The time taken to brew in this method is ten minutes. The duration changes depending on whether you like strong or mild Coffee.

Boiling Methods 

The boiling method is one of the most simple and old-fashioned practices to brew a strong cup of Coffee. This method is easy to learn and execute. 

a) Ibrik Method 

The Ibrik method was first invented in Turkey, and its name was used to represent the small pot used to do both - brew and serve. In Turkey, the small pot is named or known as Cezve. Whereas in the rest of the world, it is known as Ibrik. 

It is known to be the world's first Coffee Brewing Method, invented in the 16th century, and is still in use today. 

To make a beverage through this method, use finely ground Coffee beans and combine it with sugar in a long-handled pot (Cezve). Boil this mixture until you get good frothing, and pull out from the heat for a minute or so. Repeat this process multiple times until you get a frothy mixture.

b) Cowboy method 

Making cowboy Coffee is an easy and inexpensive process. Practically any pot and any heat source, even a campfire, can be used for brewing in this method.  

To make cowboy Coffee, add coarse-ground Coffee beans to a pot of boiling water. After boiling for a few minutes, turn off the heat and let the pot rest for a few seconds. As a result, the grounds will drop and settle at the bottom of the pot. Later you can pour it into a cup and enjoy its every sip.

Lesser-Known Methods 

Here are some of the lesser-known practices for brewing a cup of Coffee. 

a) Nitrous Coffee 

Nitrous Coffee, also commonly referred to as "Nitro", is Nitrogen-boosted Cold Brew Coffee. Adding Nitrogen to the Cold brew Coffee changes the beverage's flavour and texture, giving it a slight sweetening and light carbonation.  

You must buy Nitrous Coffee from a grocery store or a shop because the technique to make it is challenging and requires specialised equipment. In some Cafés, Nitro is available on tap, much like Beer. Although there are a few devices for sale online, they are highly priced and could be challenging to use because nitro is relatively innovative.

b) Puerto Rican Cafe 

To make Puerto Rico Cafe con leche (Coffee with milk), boiled Espresso-ground Coffee is used. Primarily Arabica Coffee beans are used in this method. This creates a sweet and creamy Coffee that has a lot of caffeine.  

To create this delightful beverage - finely ground Coffee beans are simmered in water. Once it has steeped enough, pour your beverage through a "collator," a triangle-shaped wooden holder with a cotton filter. To complete the process, add the heated milk in a 1:1 ratio to the Coffee and serve.

How to choose the right Coffee Brewing Method? 

There is no 'right' or single method to prepare a cup of Coffee.  

There are multiple ways and methods to brew Coffee. But, to answer this question, you need to consider a few factors that are listed below. 

a) For whom and how many people are you Brewing Coffee? 

b) How much time do you have to Brew a cup of Coffee? 

c) What type of equipment is at your disposal? 

d) What kind of taste and flavour are you expecting? 

e) Climatic conditions and the region you are in also matter. 

Some techniques might require a little training and guidance to handle the complicated practices of Coffee making, equipment and processes. You can become a master in making fine beverage after a few trials and errors.
