What is a Cold Brew Coffee?

You might have heard, “let’s go out for Cold Coffee” from your friends or family. You go to a café, order some cold Coffee for yourselves and enjoy it with your friends and family. This is nothing but your Cold Brew.

Steep Coffee grounds in cold water for 18-24 hours. Through this technique, coffee slowly infuses in the water, creating a strong, concentrated brew. Thus, you will get a Cold Brew. You can also add chocolate, milk cream or any other kind of flavour to it. As a result, it is less acidic and bitter.

It is usually served with ice or blended with ice, but sometimes it can also be served hot, which makes it a perfect fit for every type of climate. Apart from a basic Cold Brew, it has various other variations such as a nitro, espresso martini, cold drip Irish, etc.

Is Cold Brew different from regular Coffee?

There are many types of coffee out there; thus, it is difficult to differentiate between them. After you have learned what a Cold Brew is, let's look at how it differs from your regular drink.

Regular coffee requires hot water to steep the Coffee grounds, while to make this beverage cold or water at room temperature is used. Thus, extracting the right amount of flavour, caffeine, and the colour is time-consuming.

As fewer Coffee compounds are extracted in cold water, it makes this drink sweeter. Thus, this prolonged process makes this beverage a smoother, stronger and less acidic version of your regular drink.

How to Make a Cold Brew Coffee

Method of Preparation

The steeping process is one of the exciting and tough parts of making this drink. Although it takes a lot more time than usual, the process is worth waiting for; since it extracts the flavour, aroma and colour perfectly.

So, let’s look at the method to make this fantastic beverage:

1) The first step is to grind the Coffee beans to a medium-coarse consistency

2) Now, put 400ml of cold water into a jug or a jar

3) Add the grounds to it

4) Do not stir the mix, and leave this coffee to steep for 12-15 hours

5) Next, strain the steeped coffee into another jug or jar through a funnel or Coffee filter paper. Remember to stir the mixture before you transfer it

6) Put the strained Cold Brew concentrate to refrigerate

Take out the refrigerated concentrate and enjoy!

If you want a diluted version of the beverage, then follow these simple steps:

1) Mix 1 part of Cold Brew with two parts sparkling or still water

2) Add milk if you want a creamier and smooth version of this drink

3) Serve it with lots of ice

Extra tips

Remember, you can always upscale your drink with some extra precautions. So, here are some tips to make your extra beverage special, extra flavourful and extra refreshing:

1) Coffee beans should have a medium coarse consistency. It should be gritty and muddy instead of sandy

2) Keep water to brew ratio 4:1, i.e., four cups of water to one cup of beans

3) Use unfiltered water

4) Steep the grounds for 12hrs at least. This way, the grounds will finely infuse into the water. Remember, do not over-steep

5) Always refrigerate your concentrate to give it icy touch.

6) If you want an undiluted version, add ice. But if you like it diluted, add milk to make it creamier

How to serve Cold Brew Coffee?

Serving Cold Brew Coffee is a simple and delightful experience that can be customised to your taste. Here's a guide on how to do it properly:

Dilution (optional)

Cold Brew Coffee concentrate should be diluted with water, milk, or a milk alternative. The typical ratio is 1:1, but you can adjust it according to taste.

Serving temperature

Serve Cold Brew chilled. For an extra-cold drink, use ice cubes made from coffee to prevent dilution.

Sweeteners and flavorings

Add sweeteners like sugar, simple syrup, or honey if desired. Flavourings such as vanilla or almond extract can also enhance the coffee.

Glassware

Use a tall glass for an appealing presentation. Clear glass showcases the rich colour of the coffee.

Garnishes (optional)

Garnish with a sprig of mint, a cinnamon stick, or a twist of citrus peel to elevate the sensory experience.

Stirring

Stir the mixture well before serving to ensure that all elements are evenly distributed.

Serving

Serve immediately after preparation to maintain the freshness and flavour of the coffee.

Basic Cold Brew Coffee ratio

For the very basic reasons of Cold Brewed Coffee, the quantity of grounds to water is key for flavor and strength. Here is a simple rule of thumb:

Basic Cold Brew Coffee ratio

1) Cold Brew Coffee normal ratio: 1 part coffee grounds to 4 parts water by volume.

2) Measurement example: To make a small batch, use 1 cup of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water.  Cold Brew is made by simply mixing cold or room-temperature water with coffee grounds in a jar or pitcher.

3) Stir: Gently stir the mixture so that all coffee grounds are completely wet. Infuse: cover the bowl and allow it to sit at room temperature or place in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours.

4) Strain: Strain the coffee to separate it from the grounds using a fine mesh sieve, cheesecloth, or coffee filter.

5) Storage: Transfer to a clean jar or bottle, cover, and refrigerate. It can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.

6) Mix and serve: Add an equal amount of water or milk, or milk substitute, to taste. The result is a very strong concentrate, yet very smooth, easily brought to the desired strength of flavor by dilution to a lesser or greater extent according to the requirements of individual taste.

Nutrition information

Calories and fats

The Cold Brew contains as little as two calories in an 8-ounce serving. The beverage does come with a trace of protein and fat associated with it. This remains one of the most calorie-pure forms of coffee, given that its preparation is without sugars, fats, and oils.

Antioxidants and compounds

Cold Brew Coffee is a major source of antioxidants, and this will be shown in this review. Antioxidants in such coffee would also work to reduce inflammation and scavenge free radicals through the action of chlorogenic acid. Some studies even went further to suggest that compounds found in Cold Brew Coffee could reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Caffeine content

While the actual content of caffeine is something that would differ depending on the coffee bean used and the concentration, Cold Brew normally contains slightly less caffeine than hot-brewed coffee. However, since it is commonly served at a high concentration, it may actually be even more powerful unless diluted.

Health benefits

The low acidity of Cold Brew is what makes it preferable to people who suffer from acid reflux and peptic ulcers. Further, the low levels of bitter acids and oils can result in a smoother, cleaner sip, making Cold Brew a favoured option for those sensitive to the harshness of hot coffee.

Incorporating Cold Brew into your diet can be a delightful way to enjoy coffee, especially if you are mindful of additives:

a) Avoid sugary add-ons: Avoid excess sugars and flavoured syrups. Use natural sweeteners like honey or stevia if needed.

b) Moderation is key: As is the case with all caffeinated drinks, the intake should be moderated. Reasonably consuming Cold Brew will not result in disturbances in sleep and would be a check on dehydration.

c) Pair with healthy fats: Also, adding a splash of milk or a creamy non-dairy alternative to coffee can make it taste amazing and help in the better absorption of its beneficial compounds.
