The University traces back to the Mechanics Institute in 1834 and the Cheltenham Training College which was established in 1874. The institute was awarded university status in 2001. The University offers over 190 courses in undergraduate and postgraduate level. The university has three faculties, Media, Arts and Technology and Business Education and Professional Studies. The university is ranked in the top 20 in the UK for biosciences, media & photography, film studies and accounting & finance. The University has some notable alumni, such as Jon Callard who was an England Rugby Union player and Tony Cragg who is a British sculptor.
