Sheffield is a city based in South Yorkshire, England. Its name originates from the River Sheaf which runs through the heart of the city. Sheffield is home to around 560,000 people and is the eighth largest city in England. Sheffield is famous for its steel production and is known around the world for its innovation in the field including crucible and stainless steel. There are a grand total of 137 primary schools in Sheffield and 26 secondary schools. Nine of these secondary schools have sixth forms, and there is one separate sixth form college called Longley Park Sixth Form College. Sheffield also has five independent private schools and twelve special schools. All schools are non-selective and mixed sex schools apart from Sheffield High School which is an all-girls school. There are two universities based in Sheffield, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University which bring in a combined student population of 65,000 a year to the city. Sheffield Hallam University is a university spread over two sites in Sheffield and has provided over 750 different educational programs. The University of Sheffield is a research-centric university, originally established in 1905.
