Cardiff is the capital of Wales and the tenth largest city in the United Kingdom. It has a population of around 340,000 people. It has developed greatly since the 1990s, building a new waterfront area in Cardiff Bay, the Wales Millennium Centre (an arts complex), Cardiff International Sports Village, a new business district and BBC drama village. There are four universities in Cardiff; Cardiff University, University of South Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
There are around 100 state primary schools and 20 secondary schools, some of which providing teaching in Welsh, and a small amount of independent schools. Cardiff University was founded in 1883 originally as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and produces a lot of research as a member of the Russell Group of universities. Most of the campus is for Cardiff University is located in Cathays or right in the heart of the city centre.
