Bournemouth is a resort town which is located on the south coast of England. It is in the county of Dorset and has a population of around 183,000 people. The Bournemouth local education authority manages schools in the town. There is a two tier comprehensive system in place where students attend one of the 26 primary schools in the town and then go onto complete their education in a secondary school. Some schools are selective such as the grammar schools and ten more comprehensive schools. Independent schools also function in the town as well as one further education college. There are two universities: Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth which cross the border into the town of Poole. Bournemouth University was established in 1992 and educates around 16,000 students every year in a range of different schools; Science and Technology, Media and Communication, Health and Social Sciences and Management. Arts University Bournemouth specialises in the teaching of art and design, media and performance and hosts around 2500 students a year. The rate of unemployment in Bournemouth is at 7.5%. This is mostly on par with the national average of England which is 7.6%.
