Dublin is the capital of and largest city in Ireland with a population of around 520,000 people. It is located in the province of Leinster near the east coast, and resides at the mouth of River Liffey. Dublin is the heart of education for Ireland. It has three universities; the Dublin Institute of Technology, the National University of Ireland and Dublin City University. With its wealth of other higher education institutions, Dublin was named the European Capital of Science in 2012. The University of Dublin is the oldest university in Ireland, founded in the 16th century. Its main college, Trinity College, was established in 1592 and is located in the city centre, boasting a student population of around 15,000. Dublin Institute of Technology specialises in engineering and architecture but also offers a wealth of other programs in art, design, music, health, business and more. It has locations all across Dublin. The National University of Ireland also has a campus in Dublin. Dublin City University (also known as the National Institute for Higher Education) specialises in business, science and engineering. It is located in the suburbs of Dublin, but has over 10,000 students.
