James Burke and Lord Beeching both were alumni of Maidstone Grammar School; William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies taught at the school. Maidstone is also home to one of the University for the Creative Arts (formerly Kent Institute of Art and Design) campus, where Turner Prize, Tracey Emin, Karen Millen, and artist Tony Hart have studied.
