Portsmouth is a city in Hampshire located on the south coast of England. Portsmouth is the second largest city in Hampshire and boasts a population of around 205,000 people. Portsmouth is undergoing a transformation in terms of education, as many of the school have been rapidly improved and rebuilt in the past decade with most of them having been redeveloped as academies. For example, St Luke’s Church of England Secondary School was taken over by ARK Schools after being ranked one of the worst in the country to become Charter Academy which now exceeds the government’s minimum standard of GCSE grades.
Further education is not often offered by secondary schools in Portsmouth so colleges offer a range of vocational and academic programs for those pursuing post-16 education. In 1992, Portsmouth Polytechnic became the University of Portsmouth and has made several bounds in the field of education in law, biology and mathematics. It caters to around 22,000 students. Its most notable alumni include Simon Armitage, Ron Davies and Adrian Carter.
