The city of Athens is the largest in the country and also the capital of Greece. Athens is one of the oldest cities with a recorded history of over 3,400 years. Athens city has an approximate population of 664,000 residents. The unemployment rate for Athens currently stands at just over 5%. This is drastically lower in comparison to the national average unemployment rate which currently stands at 25%. In Greece, students learn to speak English from a very early age and is the first foreign language spoken; this means that up to 50% of Greeks speak English. The University of Athens is the oldest higher education institution in the Modern Greek state and has been a running establishment since 1837. The university has a combined student enrolment rate of up to 66,000 students both undergraduate and postgraduate. The university consists of two departments with one of them holding humanities subjects and the other holding science subjects. The National Technical University of Athens is also amongst the oldest higher education institutions and is considered to be the most prestigious of them all.
