Tehran is the capital city of Iran. With a population of 9 million people, it ranks as the second largest city in Western Asia and the third largest city in the Middle East. Tehran is the largest educational centre of Iran and is home to nearly 50 major universities and colleges. The University of Tehran, established in 1934, is the oldest modern university in Iran, and is known as ‘The Mother University of Iran’. The university currently offers over 300 bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. programmes across over twenty faculties. In addition to this, the university co-ordinates twenty major institutes and runs the University of Tehran Press which has published over 5,000 books, averaging a new publication daily. The unemployment rate is 10.4%.
