ChatGPT vs Google

With the advent of digital transformation, chatbots integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have become a go-to tool for organisations and individuals worldwide. In 2023, one of the fundamental questions that have come up regarding search engines is: Chat GPT vs Google.

Google has established itself as the market leader when it comes to search engines worldwide, but there has been a sudden spike in natural language AI models. The most popular of these models is Chat GPT, which has an estimated 100 million active users, according to Tooltester.

In this blog, we will discover the concept and workings of ChatGPT and Google, the differences between them and determine which is the better option.

Chat GPT vs Google: An introduction

To better understand the differences between ChatGPT and Google, it's important to delve into the details of what these terms mean and how they work.

A) ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a large Natural Language Model (NLM) developed by OpenAI. As a chatbot that allows users to access information, resolve queries, and engage in human-like conversations, ChatGPT has evolved into a go-to tool for organisations and individuals worldwide. It was trained on a massive dataset of diverse texts from the interne, using a deep learning algorithm.

To work, ChatGPT uses a neural network architecture that has been trained on a diverse set of test data. When you enter a message, the AI model processes the input using the neural network and generates a response based on what it has learned from the dataset. The response is then displayed for you to read.

B) Google Bard

Google Bard is an experimental Conversational AI service unveiled by Google on February 6, 2023. While it is intended to provide the same service as ChatGPT, the biggest difference is that Bard derives information from the web.

Bard is an innovative concept powered by Google’s own Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). It also takes inspiration from ChatGPT by being built on the same NLM, Transformer. LaMDA helps Bard to stand out from other AI chatbots that mostly use Large Language Models (LLM) as the fundamental aspect of their model.

C) Google Search

Google Search is a search engine developed by Google that allows users to find information on the internet. It works by indexing billions of web pages and organising them based on relevance and other factors. When a user enters a search query, Google’s algorithm analyses the query and returns a list of relevant web pages ranked by their perceived relevance to the query. The algorithm also considers factors such as the page’s content, the number and quality of links pointing to the page, and the user’s search history and location.

Google Search uses a combination of NLM, ML, and other AI technologies to understand and interpret the user’s search query and return the most relevant results. The algorithm is also constantly updated and refined to provide the most accurate and helpful results.

Chat GPT vs Google: The differences

Google Search/Bard and ChatGPT have become two fundamental sources of information to individuals and organisations worldwide, but there are some key differences between both.

A) Chat GPT vs Google Bard

Google Bard and ChatGPT are very similar in capabilities but have differences in terms of their purposes and scope. Listed below are the key differences between Google Bard and ChatGPT:

        Points of                    difference

    Google Bard

       ChatGPT

Created by

Bard was created by Google and launched on February 6, 2023.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022.

Language model

Bard was created using LaMDA, a special algorithm developed for Google’s language models.

ChatGPT was created using the Generative Pre-training Transformer (GPT).

Purpose

Google Bard is a chatbot designed specifically to help generate quality, factually correct responses to queries.

ChatGPT, as a chatbot, is more inclined to generate natural language than factually correct responses.

Training data

Bard was primarily trained on Infiniset, a large but limited data set of 1.56 million words consisting of web text and public dialogue data.

Chat GPT was initially trained on a massive dataset, including books, articles and documents from the internet.

Real-time sources

Bard uses Google Search as its sister product, using the latter’s powerful crawlers to sift through the internet and locate relevant and factually correct responses to queries.

The data set on which Chat GPT is trained is updated in real-time, allowing the AI chatbot to conjure relevant, natural language responses.

Parameters involved

Bard employs 137 billion parameters to exhibit the relevant responses.

ChatGPT utilises approximately 1 trillion parameters to exhibit natural language responses.

Conversational skill

Bard is specifically trained for conversation and dialogue, so the responses are human-like.

Chat GPT is also trained for dialogue, but the conversational skills are not very refined.

Type of output

Supports only text responses.

Supports both text and image responses.

Number of users

Approximately 1 billion people are on the waitlist for Google Bard.

ChatGPT has a total current user base of 1.2 billion users, with the number potentially expanding to significantly more by the end of 2023.

B) ChatGPT vs Google Search

Google Search and ChatGPT are very different in terms of their purpose and capabilities. Listed below are their key differences:

Points of difference

Google Search

ChatGPT

Purpose

Helps retrieve information from the web.

Generates human-like responses to natural language input.

Data sources

Indexes web pages and other online resources.

Trained on a large dataset of text and fine-tuned on specific tasks.

Input

Keyword search queries.

Natural language queries.

Output

Ranked list of relevant web pages.

Natural language responses.

Context

Search provides information within a specific domain.

ChatGPT can handle a wide range of conversational topics.

Accuracy

While it is strong for specific queries, can be limited by incomplete or inaccurate web content.

ChatGPT can generate coherent and engaging responses but may not always provide accurate information.

Access

Web-based search engine.

The AI model is available through the Application Programming Interface (API) of OpenAI.

Availability

Google Search is widely available through any device on the internet

ChatGPT can only be accessed through mobile devices and PCs.

Open-Source

No

 Yes

Conclusion

Google Bard/Search and ChatGPT serve similar purposes but use different techniques to display responses. While ChatGPT aims to return natural language responses to the user, Bard and Search display more relevant results based on the user’s queries.

When it comes to Chat GPT vs Google, Google is currently a much more reliable source of information. However, OpenAI is constantly updating and refining their data sources and NLP algorithm, so there is a possibility that ChatGPT could become the primary source of information in the future.
