Paramaribo is the capital and largest city in Suriname. It has an estimated population of around 240,000 people. The city is home to nearly half of the county’s population. Paramaribo is the business and finance centre of Suriname. It is the base for almost all of the country’s banks, insurance corporations and financial and commercial company's headquarters. It is estimated that 75 percent of Suriname's GDP is expended in Paramaribo. Paramaribo is a popular destination with travelers from the Netherlands which is making tourism an increasingly important industry. Suriname is home to the Anton de Kom University, the only university in the country. It was established in 1983 in Paramaribo.
