What is Cause and Effect in NLP?
The main focus of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Strategies is to shift the emphasis from "why" to "how". Its primary objective is to equip you with the skills to take charge of your mind, thoughts, perceptions of past and present events, and overall approach to life. In NLP, "Cause and Effect" refers to a language or communication pattern between different elements within oneself. It is the idea that one thing inevitably leads to another or has an impact on something else.
Many times, people tend to blame external factors for their inability to accomplish something. For instance, they might say, "I can't concentrate on this project because I'm having a hard time with life". The word 'because' in this statement blames some external factor or person. This kind of thinking focuses more on placing blame rather than finding a solution. In contrast, NLP training aims to help individuals identify the root causes of their problems and work towards achieving their goals without placing blame on external factors.
Similarly, people often make excuses for their failures. For instance, they might say, "I couldn't finish the job because I wasn't in the right frame of mind; I was angered by someone". Such excuses do not help in any way. Instead, one should focus on doing better, staying focused, and being determined to achieve something every day. It is essential to concentrate on the Cause of a problem and not let external factors take over. This mindset is crucial for those looking to Improve Communication Skills and develop a more proactive approach.
On the other hand, some people show absolute determination in achieving their goals. For instance, a doctor who has studied for 15 years becomes one despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks. Such individuals do not blame anyone else for their failures but take responsibility for their actions and work towards achieving their goals.
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cause and Effect are believed to be based on rules and beliefs. They are simply statements that reflect our understanding of how things work; it’s either 'X' causes 'Y', or by doing 'X' it makes 'Y' happen. However, it's important to note that just believing something doesn’t make it true. People often misunderstand Cause and Effect, for instance, assuming that someone else can put them in a certain state or make them feel a certain way, which can be quite common and limiting. This misunderstanding can be mitigated by understanding the Principles of Communication. The "If-Then" statement is also a common example of Cause and Effect, where one thing leads to another, for example, "If I work hard, then I can take care of my family."
What constitutes Causes in NLP?
Causes in NLP are claimed to be aligned with an individual’s rules and beliefs. They are basically statements that demonstrate our belief in the way things work. For example, it is either A Causes B, or by having done A that B happens as a result. Although, it is crucial to note that merely believing in anything does not make it true.
Additionally, an individual can be made to feel a certain way just based on what someone may say to them. This reaction is typically based on the distorted assumptions made by the individuals about themselves.
Now, it is important for one element to Cause another, for a Cause-and-Effect event to occur. Certain keywords to pay attention to are ‘if’, ‘then’, ‘when’, and so on. Moreover, it is not a necessity for a Cause-and-Effect statement to be deemed true because it is implied to be so. The keyword ‘because’ is also known to bring about the Cause and its consequent Effect.
In a different perspective, individuals have a tendency to interpret their world in terms of a Cause-and-Effect equation. For example, if an action carried out by an individual results in an Effect, the individual immediately judges their action to have resulted in that Effect.
This outlook is reinforced in situations where one event is consistently followed by another. The initial judgement turns into a belief that the two events are related by Causation. Over the course of time, if the initial conditions are known, an individual can predict the exact Effect.

What constitutes Effects in NLP?
The knowledge and memory of the Effects based on the initial conditions is known as ‘determinism’, which is the outlook that any event’s occurrence is completely determined by previous Causes. It emphasises on specific events rather than the future as a concept.
However, this concept does not apply effectively to human beings, as it would change the meaning behind countless aspects of their lives. Their upbringing, genetics and situations would be completely predetermined by their situations. These belief systems entail that individuals would ultimately place themselves at the ‘Effect’ end of the equation, a perspective that is often explored in NLP decision making.
Now, if an individual places themselves at the ‘Cause’ end of the equation, they will perceive themselves as the accountable entity in the situation. They are likely to take up more responsibility for how they feel and where they stand in the scenario. Such a perspective helps an individual recognise that they indeed possess the ability to be in the responsive mode rather than reactive.
The above example describes the contrasting outlook of individuals placing themselves at the ‘Effect’ end and playing the blame game on the world around them. By doing so, they in fact give their power away to others, which is considered an irresponsible mindset to have. Moreover, an individual at ‘Effect’ also takes the undue burden of feeling guilty when another person conveys that they have failed or upset them, which is addressed by understanding the 4 Pillars of NLP.
There is indeed a powerful relationship between the stimulus and the response in such scenarios because they bring about more reinforcement of the interpreted meaning in the individual’s mind.
Therefore, an individual who is at the ‘Effect’ end can in fact evaluate the incoming information in light of their existing belief system. The evaluation helps them distinguish between what really makes sense and what does not. This practice is pertinent to take back the power of accountability in the individual’s hands and be more responsible for themselves.
